Kepler Track History

Unlike the Milford and Routeburn Tracks, the Kepler Track has a rather short history, it wasn’t discovered by explorers or used by Maori as a trading track, instead the idea for a new built track came about in 1985 and was built purely for the enjoyment of walking for two reasons: 1) to celebrate the upcoming National Parks Centennial and 2) because the Milford and Routeburn Tracks were getting very busy. The Kepler Track opened in 1988 and became an instant success.

Fun Facts

  • The Kepler Track begins along the shore of Lake Te Anau, the largest body of freshwater in Australasia. The deepest part of the lake is 226 metres below sea level.

  • The Kepler Track is a 60 km loop

  • The Kepler Track was the first purpose-built multi day hiking track in New Zealand.

  • Want to take on the whole track in one day? You can as part of the Kepler Challenge that sees runners cover the whole 60 km in one day!
